Harper

My heart feels like it's pounding out of my chest. I watch the road, every passing mile marker taunting me. Mia, my little girl, is sick in a hospital, and I'm stuck here on a two-hour drive back to the city, powerless.

Jackson's hands are steady on the steering wheel, but I know him well enough to see the tension in the set of his jaw. "Harper, it's going to be okay."

I want to believe him, but the fear is choking me.

"We'll get there soon," he says, trying to reassure me.

I glance at him, his profile softened by the dashboard lights. He's here with me despite everything.

"We should put on some music," he suggests, reaching for the radio.

"No, I can't; I just can’t handle music now." I manage to say, my voice cracking.

He gets it, pulling his hand back. "Harper, look at me," he says softly. I turn, and he reaches out, taking one of my shaking hands in his own. "Breathe with me, okay?"

We inhale deeply together, holding it for a few seconds before exhaling. We repeat the exercise, and it's as if we're connected, just for that moment, by the simple act of breathing.

"We're almost there. She needs us to be strong. Can you do that for her? For us?" His eyes search mine, filled with a mix of fear and hope.

At that moment, I found a sliver of strength I didn't know I had. "Yes," I whisper, squeezing his hand.

He gives me a nod and a small, reassuring smile as he turns back to the road, accelerating towards the hospital. It's a small thing, but it helps me hold onto the fragile thread of hope that everything will be okay.

He navigates the winding mountain road with the expertise of a seasoned driver, the car accelerating smoothly under his control. Although the drive seemed endless in my state of worry, we eventually saw the city skyline emerge on the horizon. As it comes into focus, a wave of anxiety washes over me, making my stomach churn. Shifting restlessly in my seat, I nervously bite down on my lip.

It's like Jackson can sense my unraveling again. “Talk to me, Harper. What's going through your mind right now?"

"My baby's sick, Jackson. She’s never been this sick. I can't stop thinking about what could be wrong, what we might find when we get there. And all of this while I was away. My mind's a mess."

"I know, I'm scared too. But we need to stay focused. For Mia. She needs her parents to be strong." He reaches over, still keeping one hand on the wheel, and gently rests his other hand on my knee. It's grounding, this simple touch, a reminder that I'm not alone in this.

"Do you remember our first date?" he starts, clearly aiming for a distraction. "We went to that art gallery downtown."

A half-smile forms on my lips despite everything. "Yeah, I remember. I wanted to show I wasn’t only about ice hockey. You pretended to understand modern art."

He chuckles.
